Before oil, Dubai's economy rested on pearling and maritime trade, and the modern city rose quickly over that Bedouin world. For Dubai Walls in 2016, Vhils carved Musallim bin Al Kamam, a Musaifar Bedouin sheikh photographed by Wilfred Thesiger in the late 1940s, into a new City Walk façade. The fresh construction now carries a figure from the tribes that preceded Dubai's development, setting pre-oil history into the architecture of rapid growth.
