Alcântara — Av. da Índia — Walls work, 2014, Lisbon, Portugal

Vhils carved this large-scale portrait into the gable of the abandoned Sidul factory on Avenida da Índia, Alcântara — beside LX Factory and the 25 de Abril bridge — in June 2014, as part of Dissecção, his major solo exhibition at the Museu da Electricidade (Fundação EDP). A landmark of Lisbon's industrial past in a district then undergoing rapid transformation, the gable was carved before the site's redevelopment, making the building both medium and subject. Demolished in 2018, the work stood for several years, embodying Dissecção's premise that subtraction uncovers a city's cultural and social strata even as those structures remain vulnerable to renewal and disappearance.
