Contrast Mural Series — Walls work, 2014, Los Angeles, United States

At 837 North Spring Street, in Los Angeles' historic Chinatown district, Vhils carved a portrait for the Contrast Mural Series, a programme developed by LeBasse Projects with Industry Partners to commission site-specific public art across neighbourhoods undergoing continual social and cultural change. The work exposed layers already present in the building's façade, tying the portrait to the wall's own material history. Chinatown is one of Los Angeles' oldest immigrant communities, shaped by successive waves of migration, adaptation and renewal. The piece formed part of the expansion of Scratching the Surface into the United States.
