Portrait of the President — Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa — Paper work, 2026, Lisbon, Portugal

This commission redefines the tradition of painted official portraits for the Portuguese Presidency. Invited by President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa to create his official portrait for the Museu da Presidência, Vhils became the first artist to replace the customary painted likeness with a work built through excavation. Composed from a decade of Portuguese newspaper front pages—each bearing witness to the political and social events that shaped the President's two mandates—the portrait transforms the ephemeral material of daily reporting into a permanent public record. Hand-layered and carved in bas-relief from a photograph by Rui Ochoa (195 × 120 cm), the work was donated by Vhils to the Presidency, enabling the acquisition of works by eleven post-1974 Portuguese artists for the Sala do Conselho de Estado, co-curated with Carla Cardoso.
