Scratching the Surface, Łódź (Urban Forms Festival) — Walls work, 2014, Łódź, Poland

Łódź grew from 13,000 inhabitants in 1840 to more than 500,000 by 1913 as a textile powerhouse, then lost that economy after 1989. For Urban Forms in 2014, Vhils carved an ordinary passer-by into a distressed façade; 'Marek' names the photographer, not the sitter. A face breaks through the plaster of a city built by factories and worker communities, lifting an individual out of its post-industrial fabric.
