Founded in 1939, Cincinnati's Contemporary Arts Center is one of the oldest US institutions devoted to contemporary art; its Zaha Hadid building was her first completed American project. Haze opened there on 21 February 2020 with Identity: over 100 pyrotechnic charges detonated a gallery wall for the first time inside a museum, revealing an anonymous carved portrait in slow motion — 'not with chisels, but with controlled destruction that exposes the truths buried beneath' (artist statement). CityBeat: 'The resulting destruction was filmed in slow motion to create Identity, the installation that forms the centerpiece of his current exhibition Haze... This is also the first time he and his team have used explosives inside a museum.' Elsewhere in the same Cincinnati project, Vhils gave local figure 'Peanut Jim' Shelton an exterior downtown portrait; the CAC piece is not Shelton. The work was subsequently minted as the official NFT 'Vhils Explosion - Identity' (OpenSea).
