Camilo Pessanha — Portuguese Consulate — Walls work, 2016, Macau, China

A whitewashed brick wall at the Portuguese Consulate General in Macau carries this portrait of Camilo Pessanha, carved to expose the underlying masonry to model the poet's bearded features and shoulders, with ochre paint residues bleeding across the surface. Pessanha, a Portuguese poet associated with the territory, emerges directly from the architecture, the wall itself standing in for a conventional monument. Executed in December 2016 and inaugurated in 2017, that substitution ties Macau's layered cultural history to Pessanha's life and writing, both intertwined with the city's Portuguese and Chinese heritage.
