In September 2009, during the FAME Festival curated by Angelo Milano, Vhils carved a portrait known as the "Humphrey Bogart" face into the brick façade of a building at Via Castello 34, Grottaglie — part of the early expansion of Scratching the Surface into southern Italy. The intervention was cut directly into the brick, exposing the material's accumulated time, labour and local history. Left in the public realm, the work was subject to weathering and change from the outset. Its reported survival cannot be verified from currently available sources.
