Portrait (Dillon Francis)

Portrait of the American DJ and producer Dillon Francis, composed in 2022 in the artist's torn-poster language as part of a set of portrait commissions of music and art-world figures. The studio archive holds the work as twelve compositions in four numbered states each, progressing from an almost blank sheet of creased white poster paper — torn edges exposing slivers of colour beneath — to the fully revealed halftone likeness, which surfaces amid strata of skeletal leaf prints, Asian newspaper fragments and advertising remnants. Each state is paired with generative trait metadata in the archive, recording backgrounds, patterns and textures for every permutation.
