São Miguel — Carved Island Drive

São Miguel is where Vhils’ longest festival relationship lives: Walk & Talk invited him for its founding edition in 2011 and he kept returning. This short drive crosses the island’s working north — from a ruined tower above Ponta Delgada where a portrait embraces the decay, to the fishing town of Rabo de Peixe, where the faces of its oldest residents are carved into seafront walls and where a hand-carved fishing boat once sat in the harbour as a tribute to the community that built it.
