Strates Urbaines (Urban Layers) is Vhils' largest permanent commission to date, inaugurated 19 June 2024 at the new Aéroport d'Orly station of the Grand Paris Express. Spanning 35 by 7 metres across levels –1 and –2, the work unfolds as a vast composition of three anonymous portraits and fragments of the city, produced with approximately 11,132 traditional Portuguese azulejos hand-carved over 14 months. Located within a space of accelerated movement and transit, the work reintroduces the human presence into an environment often experienced as a non-place. Paris appears through multiple scales and perspectives—from its historic centre and UNESCO-listed landmarks to the Eiffel Tower, La Défense and the expanding territory of Greater Paris—while the portraits, known as the Faces of Parisians, evoke the people who inhabit, build and continually redefine it. The reflective surface of the tiles brings passing travellers into the composition, making the work shift with the movement of the station itself. The station was designed by architects Bernard Baret and François Tamisier (Chief Architect of Aéroports de Paris).
