Le M.U.R. 2012 — Walls work, 2012, Paris, France

At 107 Rue Oberkampf, the rotating wall of Le M.U.R. Oberkampf (Modulable Urbain Réactif) carried this intervention in May 2012, one of Paris' most influential platforms for ephemeral urban art. Vhils worked through the layers of advertising paper covering the billboard, revealing the image by removing material instead of adding it — echoing the site's own history of commercial messages erased and replaced. The piece embraced impermanence by design, though its life proved shorter than planned: it was stolen only days after completion. The intervention showed that Scratching the Surface could extend beyond architecture to any material holding successive layers of time and occupation.
