Rice Harvester — 2020, Comporta, Portugal

Rice Harvester, carved into the principal building at Quinta da Comporta, faces the threshing floor and rice paddies of a resort now dedicated to hospitality and retreat. The portrait recognises the generations of women whose seasonal labour shaped the fields around Carvalhal, placing that agricultural history inside a site built for leisure. The wall becomes a point of continuity between the region's present economy and the manual work it was built on — a rural encounter that extends Vhils' practice, made in 2020, beyond the metropolitan histories more commonly associated with his work.
