Beja / Portugal / 2017 — Walls work, 2017, Beja, Portugal

For the opening of the second edition of Beja na Rua, in June 2017, Vhils carved a portrait in Parque Vista Alegre — his first permanent work in the Baixo Alentejo, and part of Scratching the Surface. The piece formed part of the historic garden's rehabilitation, commissioned alongside works by Bordalo II and Add Fuel that brought contemporary art into the city's everyday spaces. It set local faces within a park reclaimed for public life and cultural activity, contributing to the site's renewed civic identity. The portrait remains in place today as a recognised landmark, reflecting the lasting relationship between the intervention and the city.
