VHILS MARKS 20 YEAR-CAREER WITH NEW MONOGRAPH

Book is placed on sale on 29 April at www.under-dogs.net

“Pentimento” is the title of the new monograph of Portuguese visual artist Alexandre Farto, also known as Vhils, available from 29 April through the online shop of Underdogs (Lisbon-based cultural platform which he co-directs).

Consisting in the most extensive survey of the artist’s work to date, the 608-page monograph seeks to revisit 20 years of his career – from late 1999, when Vhils began writing graffiti, to late 2019 – and includes some 199 works previously unseen by the public.

Pentimento is an Italian term that, in its literal sense, means repentance. In the context of painting, the term refers to traces left by artists beneath the layers that form a final work, revealing earlier, dismissed stages that correspond to changes made during the creative process. In the context of Vhils’ oeuvre, the title plays with the artist’s practice of revealing by way of removal or erosion that which is symbolically found buried beneath the surface layers of the media he works with.

With editorial coordination by Miguel Moore (author and editor at Vhils Studio), who also wrote the main essay, an introductory text by Roger Gastman (American author, curator, and researcher in the fields of graffiti, urban art, and contemporary art), and designed by João M. Machado (www.joaomachado.net), the book undertakes a voyage through some of the artist’s main and most iconic pieces, projects, and exhibitions, providing a chronological view of the evolution of his oeuvre. It presents some 600 works in total, including circa 199 never-before-seen works, 143 outdoor works, 158 works with advertising posters, 81 works with wood, 43 works with metal, and 23 installations, among others.

“Pentimento – Alexandre Farto aka Vhils” is published in a regular edition, together with a special edition limited to 300 units, signed and numbered by the artist, which includes an acrylic slipcase with digital printing and an exclusive screen print. The monograph’s contents are in English.

The book will be available for purchase from 4 pm GMT+1 on Wednesday 29 April, through Underdogs’ online shop: www.under-dogs.net
