FESTIVAL IMINENTE, RIO DE JANEIRO
7 AND 8 JUNE AT CIDADE DAS ARTES
Festival Iminente is heading over to Brazil!
On 7 and 8 June, Rio de Janeiro’s Cidade das Artes will be hosting the music and art festival curated by Vhils and Underdogs. Two days to discover Portugal’s hottest music and visual arts expressions and how they interact with Brazil’s newest artistic creations.
For the second time running, Cidade das Artes is hosting the “Portugal 360” initiative organised by Portugal’s Tourism Board, which invited Festival Iminente to be part of the event.
Portugal is sending out leading figures of the urban music scene who have grown up in the peripheries of Lisbon and today are major references on dance floors around the world. DJ Nigga Fox and DJ Marfox are figureheads of the renowned Príncipe Discos label; Allen Halloween is one of the leading voices of Portuguese rap; and Shaka Lion returns to his native Brazil to team up, for two nights, with locals Carlos do Complexo and DKVPZ. Festival Iminente will also be stage to the expression and statements of Majur and Hiran, two major talents in Brazil’s rap scene.
In the visual arts, Festival Iminente is taking to Cidade das Artes artists who reflect the transformative spirit of urban art in contemporary societies and cities. Add Fuel and Finok are experts in reinventing elements from the popular cultures and symbolic traditions of their native countries – Portugal and Brazil. ±MaisMenos± explores the use of the word, using it visually while conferring it with new designs.
Besides the visual arts and musical line-ups, the Iminente crowd will have access to a variety of activities that bring together the whole event. The Festival kick-starts on 7 June with a debate on art and activism in the 21st century between Brazilian alternative media collective Mídia Ninja and the Portuguese visual artist Miguel Januário, known for his cutting-edge, provocative ±MaisMenos± project. On 8 June, you have the opportunity to take part in a stencil workshop, led by Portuguese artist and tile master Add Fuel. The same day will also see the screening of the documentary “Have You Seen the Listers?” that accompanies the creative endeavours (and turbulent personal life) of Australian artist extraordinaire Anthony Lister, using his country’s conservative society as background.
